PASSENGER figures on buses in Darlington have risen by up to ten per cent since free travel for elderly and disabled people was introduced.

On Monday night, the borough's transport forum was told the increase in numbers has been "noticeable," even though the changes were only made on April 1.

It was also revealed that an online bus route planner is to be introduced in Darlington from May, which will be based on the national route planner, but would give more accurate and specific information for this area.

Doug Elphee, from bus operator Stagecoach North-East, said they had seen an increase in passenger numbers.

"It is difficult to tell exactly what the increase has been, because this Easter is different to last Easter, but it is between a five and ten per cent increase, maybe even more than that," he said.

Mayor of Darlington Councillor Stella Robson - who also represents the borough's Bank Top ward - said: "There has been quite an increase in bus passengers, it has been excellent.

"I know it has only been introduced this month, but it has been noticeable."

Mowden councillor Ron Lewis said numerous people had told him they were now starting to use buses in the town because of the introduction of free travel.
