A VILLAGE maypole has been replaced, renewing a family tradition dating back three generations.

The original maypole in Ovington Village, near Barnard Castle, is thought to have been erected about 100 years ago, but was replaced in the 1940s.

The replacement was supplied by Charles Peat - the former MP for Darlington - as a gift to the people of Ovington.

When the current pole started to show signs of wear, the parish council approached the Peat family for help once again.

The new pole was made from a tree planted on land owned by the Peat family.

Yesterday, Northern Electric Distribution Limited staff lifted the pole into a hole drilled into the village green.

Retired farmer David Peat said: "The Douglas fir tree that was used would have been planted in 1933 and was selected by my son Edward - who clearly has a good eye for this - about 18 months ago.

"I went to watch and it was a spectacular bit of work to put this pole up - but I don't think I will be able to see the next one put up.
