SECURITY guards who are members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union working for MacLellan in the North Tyneside and Newcastle area went on strike yesterday in a two-day work stoppage over pay.

The strike by the 46 security guards, which runs until 7am tomorrow, will cause disruption and could see the biggest civil service site in the country, at Longbenton, close temporarily.

Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary, said: "Members are angry as they have to endure pay increases directly in line with national minimum wage, yet directors enjoy huge pay increases - between 144 per cent and 177 per cent.

"Senior managers need to recognise the anger amongst staff who feel betrayed and start to negotiate with the union to avoid further strike action."
