MUSIC from around the world will be performed by Darlington Orchestra at a concert to celebrate their 60th anniversary.

Their Around the World in 80 Minutes show is being described by organisers as a good introduction to classical music, and the concert's special guests will be the Polam Hall School Ensembles.

Conductor David Plews said they wanted to begin their diamond anniversary celebrations with a concert to remember.

"Around the World in 80 Minutes features rarely-heard folk songs from the mountains of Sweden and fjords of Norway, dances from the Welsh valleys, meditations from Turkey and showstoppers from America," he said.

"With some Beethoven thrown in, there really should be something for everybody."

The orchestra has also received National Lottery funding to continue celebrations later in the year with a 'Promz for Kidz' programme, which will involve local youngsters in the development of new music for the orchestra.

The Around the World in 80 Minutes concert will be held at Darlington Arts Centre on Wednesday, May 17, from 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 or £3 for concessions, and are available from (01325) 486555.
