Mark Proctor has warned failure to reach the play-offs will come at a cost for some Darlington players who are out of contract this summer.

The majority of the squad's deals are up for renewal at the end of the season, and Proctor admits some will be deemed surplus to requirements. A retained list has been drawn up and will be announced next month.

With League Two football as good as certain next season, Proctor has warned the list will not make pleasant reading for some.

"I think it's inevitable that some are going to feel the repercussions more than others," admitted the Quakers No.2. "It now looks as though we're not going to reach the play-offs, which isn't good enough.

"The manager and myself have a lot to talk about, with players we'd like to keep and those who will be allowed to move on."

Key defender Shelton Martis, one of Quakers' better performers in his first season with the club, is out of contract next month and is attracting interest from Leeds.

Another defender, David McGurk, has enjoyed a highly successful loan spell with York, and the Teessider may be allowed to join the Minstermen on a permanent basis.

James Beaumont has been allowed to return to Nottingham Forest after one appearance as an injury time substitute at Rochdale.

Hodgson has also sent striker Taiwo Atieno back to Walsall after an unsuccessful loan spell.

Meanwhile, Phil Stamp and Brian Close are expected to return to training when the club reassembles for pre-season training in July. Stamp (calf) and Close (ankle) had operations on Monday.
