BRASS band-playing twins Ben and Tim Cauldwell have earned their Duke of Edinburgh gold award thanks to their musicianship.

The pair travelled to France as part of a music ensemble for the residential part of the award and helped with a Scout group for the service element.

The 21-year-old brothers, from Sedgefield, worked with Durham County Council's education in the community service at Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre in order to gain the awards.

Ben, who is studying law at Durham University, took up parachuting for the physical recreation section, while Tim, who is studying dentistry at Newcastle University, played football.

Both will be presented with their award in London later this year.
