A DURHAM multi-storey car park has received a national award for the level of security it offers.
The 265-space Riverside car park, near The Gates Shopping Centre, has been granted a Safer Parking Park Mark, which was presented by Durham's Chief Constable, Jon Stoddart.
The award scheme, which is run for the Association of Chief Police Officers, is designed to recognise car park operators who meet standards of security and to promote those standards.
Car parks are assessed for things such as CCTV coverage, lighting and perimeter security.
The award can be held annually, as long as the standards are maintained.
Mr Stoddart said: "It is a very demanding standard. It reduces crime and adds to the quality of life for people coming to Durham.''
Graham Lovelly, senior operations manager for car park operator Excel Parking, said: "We have done a lot of work, including improving the lighting of the car park.''
