BUSINESSES have been praised for pledging financial help towards the cost of printing a book about the heritage of the Bedale area over the past 150 years.

The voluntary committee working on Reflections of Bedale, due out this year, had to work harder to secure funding after a grant application for £3,500 was rejected by North Yorkshire County Council. Since then, the committee has worked to raise funding through placing advertisements in the book.

The appeal has raised £8,250, with £1,000 still to come in.

A spokesman for the Friends of Bedale Heritage Book Committee said the response meant publishing costs would be covered. He said: "It is even more remarkable that this sum has been achieved only within several months. People have risen to the occasion."

Through articles and pictures, many in colour and never seen in print before, the book will tell the story of the characters, families, businesspeople, trades and professions in Bedale, Aiskew and Leeming Bar. Proceeds from sales will go to local charities.
