A Take That fan lost her unborn baby and is fighting for her life after going into labour at the opening show of the band's tour.

The woman left her seat just before the end of the gig and went in toilets where she collapsed.

She was rushed to hospital after being attended by St John's Ambulance workers but her baby died.

The woman's family are with her today in the high dependency unit at Newcastle upon Tyne's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The incident happened at the end of Take That's show at the city's Metro Radio Arena on Sunday night.

It was the opening night of the band's sell-out reunion tour, which continues across the UK in the coming weeks.

One fan said: "As the show ended everyone was filing out but stewards were stopping people from going into the men's toilets.

"We were told a woman had left her seat and had gone in there because her waters had broken.

"We assumed it was the closest place to her seat that she could go to and that she was in labour.

"The toilets were cordoned off completely and St John's volunteers were looking after her.

"An ambulance was called and it arrived after about 20 minutes to take her to hospital.

"People were quite excited about it, it seemed a happy ending to a good night but it is really sad that she has lost the baby.

"There were quite a lot of pregnant women there, Take That fans are now at the age where they are starting families. "One heavily pregnant woman even had a T-shirt on saying "My Bump Rocks."

News of the incident reached the band, before it was realised a tragedy had happened.

Mark Owen said: "My first thought was that it was my girlfriend Emma until I realised she isn't far enough on to go into labour."

A spokeswoman for the Royal Victoria Infirmary said: "Unfortunately the baby died and the mother is critically ill.

"She is being cared for and her family don't want to make any comment as they deal with a very difficult situation."
