YOUNG volunteers have been recognised for their efforts after they completed hundreds of hours of unpaid work to benefit their community.

Dozens of Millennium Volunteers have each carried out 200 hours and have received an excellence award to mark the occasion.

The Hambleton Millennium Volunteers, based at North-allerton College, have carried out 80,000 hours of work since the scheme was introduced in 1999.

Young people are encouraged to take part in activities such as music, drama, fund-raising, providing respite care, carrying out odd jobs for disabled and elderly people and environmental work.

Co-ordinator Donna Westbrook said: "The work carried out by these willing volunteers has a major impact on the quality of life in our community. It also benefits the volunteers, who grow in confidence and emotionally by giving so much of their time."

The latest recipients of the 200-hour certificate from the Northallerton and Richmond area were: Charlotte Allinson, Helen Atkinson, James Baker, Sarah Ball, Adele Carmichael, Sian Davies, Anna Dawson, Rachael Duck, Anna Gillespie, Hannah Goldie, Lisa Heslop, Lucy Judd, Iona Lloyd, Jennifer McAndrew, Katie Noble, Lucy Pilkington, Emma Roberts, Rachael Roberts, Charlotte Rolf, Lauren Shuttleworth, Stephanie Spittle, Sarah Stephens and Natalie Williams.
