A GARDENER has come up smelling of roses after winning a sports car on a National Lottery scratchcard.
David Bell, from Houghton-le-Spring, Wearside, is trading in his old model after winning the Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch SRi - top prize on the Cars 'n' Cash scratchcard.
The 22-year-old bought his ticket from Londis newsagents in Bearpark, Durham City.
Mr Bell, a gardener with Seaham Town Council, picked up his new car from Patrick's Vauxhall dealership at Pity Me, Durham City.
He said: "I had been discussing the idea of upgrading my car with my partner, Stacey, and I thought I might as well try my luck. I couldn't believe it when I scratched off the winning symbols and I was over the moon when I realised the top prize was a Vauxhall Astra SRi - it's a make and model I would have chosen myself. I can't wait to get behind the wheel and try the car out."
