CONCERN over a proposed housing development at a former reservoir could lead to the scheme being refused planning permission.

The proposal is for up to eight executive homes on disused land on the old reservoir site, at Stotfold Farm, south of Seaton village, near Seaham.

But the application has aroused concerns over development in the countryside, while other potential problems highlighted include the narrow access road, which has no footpath, causing a danger for pedestrians.

People in nearby Seaton are said to be opposed to the plan because of fears over extra traffic passing through the village, and a knock-on risk to walkers and horse riders.

Seaton Parish Council has also cited concerns over the narrow access to the site, via Hillrise Crescent.

But the applicant, Martin Bulmer, who has resubmitted a previously withdrawn proposal, says the development would provide a boost to local traders and services.

He adds that a beneficial aspect of the plan would be the removal of the old reservoir walls, which pose a danger to children playing in the vicinity.

The application goes before Easington District Council's development control committee tomorrow.

Members are recommended to refuse the scheme on the grounds that is is an "unacceptable" development in open countryside and is too far from Seaton.
