TWO teenagers will appear in court today following an attack on an asylum seeker in a North-East park.

The 45-year-old Iranian was walking through Walker Park, Newcastle, when he was set upon by a number of people on Friday night.

He suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Newcastle General Hospital where his condition was initially described as serious, but not life threatening.

The victim was detained in hospital where he was yesterday said to remain in a serious, but stable condition.

Police described the incident as a totally unprovoked attack.

Twelve people were detained in a series of arrests following the incident, and police said yesterday that two were charged in relation to the assault.

William Day, 18, of Eldon Gardens, and Gary Shawn Smith, 18, of Corby Gardens, both Walker, Newcastle, will appear before city magistrates accused of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Detectives are continuing to seek witnesses to the attack and have appealed for information from anyone in the area, shortly after 10.30pm on Friday.

They are asked to contact police on 0191-214 6555, and ask for Byker CID.
