ACTOR Edward Fox has followed in his great-grandfather's footsteps.

Samson Fox held a famous ox roast on the Stray, in Harrogate, to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887.

Now there will be an ox roast on May 7 in aid of local charities.

On a recent visit to the town, Edward Fox used his ancestor's knife and fork to slice himself a piece of beef from urban farm shop Weeton's, at West Park, which is holding the event as part of a day of events being held on the Stray to celebrate the town's history.

Harrogate Mayor Councillor Caroline Bayliss has organised a well to well walk to tour the many wells that first brought Harrogate to prominence.

Sheep will return to the Stray courtesy of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and there will be Victorian gentlemen and ladies promenading.

Coun Bayliss said: "Please do come and celebrate Harrogate's great history and the wonderful place it is today to live in, by joining us."

The legacies of industrialist Samson Fox can still be seen in Harrogate. He provided the town with new gas street lighting, a steam fire engine and built social housing which still stands today.
