A FUNERAL takes place today for a retired professor of German and well-known Quaker.

Douglas Scott, an emeritus professor at Durham University, died in hospital last Saturday at the age of 95.

Professor Scott was the son of German parents who settled in Britain in the early 20th Century.

He studied at London University and went on to take a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Gottingen, in Germany.

As a member of the Society of Friends, he trained as a medical orderly and served as a medic during the Second World War.

Appointed as a reader in German at Durham, in 1949, he was made a professor in 1958, holding the post until he retired in 1975.

He is remembered at Durham for building up the German department, particularly during the 1960s, a period of re-organisation at the university. He championed the interests of modern languages and other arts subjects.

He was married to the late Margaret and is survived by his daughters Elisabeth and Helen.

Friends are invited to meet for a service at Durham Crematorium, at 9am today.

Donations can be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Alzheimer's Society.
