A NEW junior parish council has been awarded funding to help it support young people in the area.

The Gets and Gives Council, from Wolsingham, received £500 from volunteer group 2D.

The council was set up last September when Wolsingham Parish Council approached Paula Lewis at Wolsingham School and Community College about the possibility of forming a junior parish council.

A group of 20 students expressed an interest and since then, they have been meeting regularly in school with Elaine Ridley, from the parish council, and Catherine Purvis, from Groundwork West Durham.

John Anderson, chairman of the parish council, has also visited the youngsters and has invited them to attend a meeting soon.

The students have also organised a non-uniform day in school, raising more money for the work of their council.

Ms Lewis said: "It is rewarding for the students to be actively involved in their local community and hopefully others will soon reap the benefits of their hard work and commitment."
