A STAFF Sergeant at the elite Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst has appeared at crown court charged with killing a policeman in a car smash.

Steven Graham spoke only to say "yes sir" when asked to confirm his name during a short hearing today.

Staff Sergeant Graham, who has 22 years service, is accused of the manslaughter of PC Joe Carroll.

He appeared at Newcastle Crown Court today via videolink to Durham jail.

The 39-year-old who is based at Sandhurst, Berks - where princes Harry and William have both served - is also accused of assaulting PC Carroll's colleage Inspector Brian English.

PC Carroll, 46, was taking Staff Sgt Graham to Etal Lane police station in Newcastle, when his car overturned on the A69, near the junction of the A68, at Corbridge, Northumberland, at 2.30am last Thursday.

PC Carroll later died of his injuries, while fellow Inspector English suffered minor injuries.
