LIBRARY shelves have been cleared for the arrival of new books after readers bought hundreds of titles at reduced prices at the weekend

A sale in the Coatham Memorial Hall, Redcar, raised £1,000 for council library services and helped make room for new arrivals.

Hundreds of titles covering fiction and non-fiction for juniors and adults were sold in five hours.

The success of the pilot fundraiser will encourage bosses at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to hold other sales for their 43,000 borrowers.

Councillor Dave Fitzpatrick, council cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: "The idea was a terrific success on Saturday. We must have had at least a couple of hundred people through the doors - and everyone seemed to be buying a book. We will be looking at holding a series of sales, considering different venues across the borough."

Details of the next sale will be released after Easter.
