AN east Durham mother and daughter have been recognised for their outstanding achievements at an awards ceremony.

Liz Longstaff, 53, and her daughter Julie Longstaff, 30, from Peterlee, were both presented with an Aim High Achievement Award by local best-selling author Michael Heppell.

It was since taking a Steps (Steps to Excellence for Personal Success) programme at Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School in Peterlee, that the pair began to make changes in their lives.

The project gives people the tools and techniques to help realise their potential.

Since starting on the programme, Liz has found a new job as assistant manager at a local card retailers and Julie has made a raft of changes in her life, including quitting smoking.

Liz and Julie were nominated by Liz Alderson, the family learning leader at the school, who said: "I nominated Liz and Julie for their commitment and because they have done so well since taking part in a Steps programme at our school."

Kate Welch, chairwoman of the Aim High network, said: "The awards ceremony was an amazing evening with many stories of life-changing experiences.

"Liz and Julie have done so well after attending the Steps course, and we would encourage everyone in east Durham to take part."

Liz and Julie were presented with their awards at a ceremony at Shotton Hall, Peterlee.

Aim High is a network which brings together outreach services in the Easington district.
