CHILDREN from a Darlington school learned about the work of a dogs charity during a visit organised as part of a new course.
Darlington-based Countryside Crime Watch (CCW) and Darlington Police are working with Firthmoor Primary School on a project to encourage more awareness of rural issues among young people.
On Friday, a group of pupils were taken on a visit to the Dogs' Trust, at Sadberge village, near Darlington.
Staff from the centre talked to the children, who also met some of the puppies being prepared for rehoming.
The course started because the police and CCW, a Darlington rural neighbourhood watch group, felt it would be useful for children to learn more about the countryside surrounding the town.
Believed to be the first of its type in the region, the course started earlier this year and involves classes on wildlife identification, litter awareness, map-reading and survival techniques
