THE funeral of a North-East council's deputy leader will be held on Monday in his home village.

The service for Don Ross will be at 2.15pm in St Edmund's Church, Bearpark, near Durham City, and will be followed by private cremation.

Councilllor Ross, 71, who represented the Framwellgate Moor division of Durham County Council since 1987 and held the post of number two on the Labour-run authority since 2001, died suddenly at home on Monday.

He leaves a widow, Joan, and two daughters. Elaine and Ann.

As The Northern Echo reported yesterday, he was described as a "tremendous politician, councillor and community leader'' by council leader Ken Manton, who led the tributes.

There will only be family flowers at the funeral and the family are asking for donations to St Edmund's Church.
