A FURNITURE manufacturer announced the first of 30 redundancies yesterday.

County Durham's Europa Sofabeds and Brundellwood Upholstery is shedding 19 jobs within the next week.

It is expected to announce further cuts as it reduces the number of factories it has on the Newton Aycliffe Industrial park from three to two.

Managing director John Forrester said he was still waiting to hear from the landlord of the three sites to decide which factory to close.

He is hoping to combine the manufacturing facilities of Europa and Brundellwood in the same plant, with a second unit for returns and imports.

The company also made seven redundancies last month.
