A CERTIFICATE has been handed to a community post office for supporting fire safety.

Norton Post Office, near Stockton, welcomed firefighters into its premises to chat to customers and encourage them to sign up for free home fire safety checks.

Postmaster David Scullion received the award on behalf of the branch as a thank you from Cleveland Fire Brigade.

The partnership, which was set up by the brigade's older people's advocates, generated more than 250 checks, 25 per cent of which were for people over 60.

Mr Scullion said: "We opened our doors to the brigade and we are only too happy to promote fire safety.

"A large proportion of our customers are pensioners and this was an ideal place for the brigade to get their message across.

"We are committed to our community."

Les Jones, community safety manager with the brigade, said: "Research shows that 60 per cent of all fires in the home involve people over the age of 60.

"We have taken a proactive approach and have employed two older people's advocates to open up new avenues to talk to this age group."
