A £120M scheme to boost a tourist spot's holiday industry is likely to win planning approval this week.

Benchmark Properties, based in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, wants to develop a 50-acre site on Scarborough's North Bay to create a covered leisure centre, water park, hotel, holiday and 100 permanent luxury flats, casino, family entertainment complex, shops, restaurants and bars.

The developer has earmarked a site that includes the Atlantis water theme park, the derelict Marvel's cliff top park, and the Corner Cafe entertainment centre.

If it goes ahead, the site will be named The Sands and will be one of the largest developments in any British resort.

While Scarborough Council's planners are recommending approval, council members will be told on Thursday that there have been more than 90 letters of objection.

Head of planning services Gordon Somerville said in a report: "The buildings will be unashamedly modern.

"The curves of the buildings are one of the main strengths of the scheme, reflecting both the shape of the site and some of the crescents already in Scarborough."

English Heritage said it is concerned that the modern architecture will look out of place near the town's Norman Castle, which bridges the North and South Bays.

Mr Somerville said approval of the scheme was subject to 75 conditions, which will include contributions from Benchmark towards providing education and affordable housing in the town.
