THE number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance in Redcar has risen by seven per cent.

The latest figures show 137 more people claiming the unemployment benefit last year.

Ian Swales, Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Redcar, said: "These figures are extremely worrying. The UK appears to be heading back to the bad old days of economic insecurity and queues at the job centre.

"Increasing unemployment when households are taking on record levels of personal borrowing spells real trouble.

"The rise in people claiming jobseeker's allowance can no longer be dismissed as a temporary blip."
