TWO PEDESTRIANS needed hospital treatment after being knocked down by a runaway car.

One of the duo, a 23-year-old man, will have to have an operation after sustaining a deep cut to his left knee. A 48-year-old man escaped with heavy bruising after the driver of a Renault Five lost control of his car which mounted a pavement, careered through a fence and into the two men.

Cleveland Police said the car had been travelling along Coronation Drive, Hartlepool, when it crossed Newburn Bridge into Mainsforth Terrace, where the accident occurred, just before 9am on Monday.

Witnesses are asked to contact the police by telephoning (01642) 301552.
