Crook Town are in dreamland this morning after a second half goal from Roy Allen put them into the quarter-finals of the FA Vase for the first time in their history.

Allen's 75th minute winner at Arnold Town prompted a good natured pitch invasion by Crook's delirious travelling army, and now they're crossing their fingers for a good draw this morning.

Manager Alan Oliver said: "Our game plan worked perfectly. We watched Arnold play in midweek, and we decided to go with three up front to give us a chance.

"It was a tremendous goal by Roy, fit enough to win any cup tie, but we'd been threatening something like that. It was a very good all-round team performance, and the players really dug in to keep Arnold's chances down to a minimum.

"People are starting to talk now of going all the way. When we started this run , we would have been content just to get through a couple of rounds, but now we've come this far, we're talking about the final.

"We've got as good a chance as anybody else in the last eight. All the clubs play at the same level, it's not as if we're playing somebody from the Conference or the UniBond League.

"We'd love a home draw now, but we're not scared either about playing away from home. It's a fantastic result for the club - it's one of the biggest moments in the club's recent history."

Crook had an early scare when Scott Huckerby, brother of Norwich striker Darren, hit the post from a few yards, but Crook hit back and Jonathan Milroy fired just wide.

They nearly took the lead just after half-time when Danny Mellanby hit the post from Milroy's cross, but there was no mistake on 75 minutes when Mellanby flicked the ball on for Allen to beat the keeper with a low first time volley.

Newcastle Benfield are out after they were beaten 2-1 by Squires Gate from the North West Counties League.

They went a goal down after just two minutes, but Benfield were level after 20 minutes with a Micky Chilton penalty.

Benfield had most of the play after that but didn't create many chances, and their hearts were broken on 68 minutes when Chris Cairns mishit a close range effort past Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger.

Benfield manager Paul Baker said: "We had enough opportunities, but we couldn't finish them off. We were camped in their half for most of the second half, but were beaten by a fluke goal. It was an achievement reaching the last 16, but I honestly thought that we had a chance of progressing."

The draw for the quarter finals will be made this morning.

Other teams left in are; Squires Gate (North West Counties League), Bury Town (Eastern League) Pickering (Northern Counties East League), Nantwich (North West Counties League) or Buxton (Northern Counties East League), Cammell Laird (North West Counties League), Hillingdon (South Midlands Premier), Newmarket Town (Eastern League).

Cammell Laird are favourites after Winchester were beaten by Newmarket.
