A MAN has admitted starting a fire in his ex-wife's garage, while she slept in her adjoining house.
But Paul Bell, 38, denies any intention to pose a threat to the life of Wendy Charlton.
Yesterday, he pleaded guilty to a charge of destroying property, namely the garage door handles, at the premises in Staintondale, Newton Aycliffe, on November 24.
But, during a short hearing at Durham Crown Court, he denied the more serious charges of arson with intent to endanger the life of Ms Charlton, and arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered.
Catherine Fagan, prosecuting, said the pleas were not considered acceptable to the Crown and the case was adjourned for a trial.
Bell, of Rowan Place, Newton Aycliffe, was bailed to live at an address outside the town pending the trial, scheduled for March 16.
