THE North-East will not face hosepipe bans and other water restrictions this summer, whatever the weather has in store.

Despite the dry winter, there is water, water everywhere in the region's 21 reservoirs, and plenty of drops to drink, Northumbrian Water said yesterday.

All are about 90 per cent full, with levels higher than they usually are at this time of year. The biggest, Kielder, in Northumberland, can hold 44,000 million gallons.

Last summer, some parts of the South were hit by water shortages and the Environment Agency has warned there may not be enough to go round again this year.

A Northumbrian Water spokesman said yesterday: "There will be no restrictions in our area this year. We have more than enough water.

"Ever since Kielder came on stream, we have never had any water restrictions. Our water is one of the major factors encouraging businesses to come to the North-East, because we can guarantee that we can deliver it."
