A FACELIFT scheme costing £57,000 will begin this week on a rundown east Durham shopping precinct.

The money is to be spent improving pedestrian walkways at the Edenhill Road shopping parade, in Peterlee.

The improvement work has been made possible through a Home Office initiative which aims to deliver physical environmental improvements to areas which have become down at heel.

The improvements at Edenhill road shopping precinct are intended to create a more pleasant, open and safer environment for both shoppers and shopkeepers.

The scheme is being administered by Groundwork East Durham, working with the Communities First project to make the area safer for all members of the community.

An unsightly bricked area with rusting railings is to be removed and replaced with wave' pattern block paving and tree plantings.

Bollards are to be put in place to free the area of traffic, lighting will be installed and a grassed area created.

Project manger Ken Wilson said: "This shopping precinct at Edenhill Road is very well used, and wear and tear over the years has left it in need of some attention. The work that has just begun will improve the area in terms of safety, security, attractiveness and accessibility."
