POLICE will urge magistrates to overturn a Middlesbrough Council decision giving the go-ahead to a round-the-clock drinks party.

Cleveland Police last night revealed plans to appeal to a Teesside Bench after members of the council's licensing sub-committee decided the Blue bar should have a temporary 3am to 10am licence on February 18.

For the 350 revellers expected at the bar in Middlesbrough town centre, the party will have started at a hard house music event at 9pm, the previous evening, at the Tall Trees, Yarm.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm we are appealing.''

Police say the town centre has reached saturation level with the number of licensed premises, resulting in "immense'' crime and disorder problems.

Paul Angus, events manager at the Blue nightspot, said: "I think it's unfair. They have not given us a chance to prove we can run this event.

"We will go all the way. We want this event and we have won one battle.''
