AN investigation is being carried out after a pregnant woman was hit by a fork-lift truck at a North-East factory.

Police and an ambulance were called to the Cummins engine factory, in Yarm Road, Darlington, yesterday.

The 35-year-old woman was taken to hospital with what was described as a nasty leg injury after the incident, which happened at 1.30pm.

Both the woman and her unborn child were last night believed to be safe.

Inspector Alan Watson, of Darlington police, said officers attended the factory as a matter of procedure, but would not be investigating further.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service confirmed the woman was pregnant and was treated for a foot injury. The injuries were not life-threatening and the unborn baby was thought to be unharmed.

The woman was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital before being transferred to James Cook Memorial Hospital, Middlesbrough, for specialist treatment.

A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive said: "We are awaiting information and details of the incident, and once we receive them, we will consider them and decide whether we need to carry out an investigation."
