DAVID HODGSON may have failed to make a breakthrough at the closure of last night's transfer window, but the Darlington manager remains hopeful of completing one signing this week.

Hodgson will seek talks with Guy Bates' representatives today, with a view to signing the former Newcastle United striker until the end of the season. The 20-year-old is a free agent, meaning he can join a club at any time.

Hodgson has stepped up his interest in Bates after failing to land a striker from a higher division yesterday. The Quakers boss was also thwarted in his attempts to bring in a defender.

"There were a couple of players I wanted, but we weren't able to tempt them here because of the division we're in," said Hodgson.

"We've had a look at the lads who we've had in on trial, but we didn't feel any of them would make us a better team.

"I'm sure they will do a good job for another team, but we're looking for something a little different - a player who would give us that little bit extra.

"We're always looking to improve the team, but we're not going to bring in three or four new players just for the sake of it."

Newcastle-born Bates recently returned to England after a brief spell in Australia with Newcastle United Jets.

The 20-year-old netted for Quakers' reserves in a 2-0 win over Hartlepool earlier this month and has made a favourable impression with Hodgson.

"We're going to take the next step with Guy," revealed Hodgson. "We've had him in for a while and I like him."

However, Hodgson will not be pursuing his interest in striker Dale Studzinski after talks stalled over "one or two issues". The South African was one of five trialists who played in a practice game yesterday.

Australian midfielder Chris Triantis and a Slovakian forward also featured in the run-out, both failing to impress Hodgson.

Defender Toni Oliveira - son of former Portugal national coach Antonio Oliveira - was also given a run out, without making any impression.

Congolese international Lord-Kangana N'diwa took part in yesterday's game and Hodgson is keen to take another look at the out-of-contract Bolton defender.

With another six days to make loan signings, Hodgson also has the option to strengthen his squad on a temporary basis.

Stephen Thomas is training with York City after being released by Quakers this week.
