CHINESE New Year was celebrated at a town hall yesterday.
The Civic Centre at Chester-le-Street, County Durham, was the venue for a procession and dance performance by schoolchildren in Chinese costume.
About 20 youngsters from the reception class at Ouston Primary School paraded through the headquarters, carrying banners and lanterns they made at school.
They treated onlookers, including council staff and civic leaders, to their version of the dragon dance, a traditional ritual that ushers in the new year
The event was attended by the council's leader, Linda Ebbatson, and its chairman, Allen Turner.
The Chinese theme continues today as oriental food will feature on the menu alongside traditional British fare at the Civic Centre restaurant.
