A MAYOR is appealing to villagers to help children suffering from the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the poor economic situation in Belarus.

Councillor Maxine Robinson, the Mayor of Sedgefield, is supporting Chernobyl Children Life Line, and hopes residents will donate clothes and toys for the youngsters.

The charity organises an annual trip for children from Chernobyl, many of whom have cancer, during which they stay with a local family for a month and enjoy trips across the country.

Coun Robinson said: "These children come over with absolutely nothing, only the clothes they stand up in.

"I'm appealing for local people to donate clean, good quality clothing for children and adults, as well as any toys they can spare, though nothing electrical.

"The children will then be given the chance to choose clothes for themselves and their siblings and parents.

"Anything remaining is to be transported by convoy to Chernobyl later in the year."

Any donations should be taken to Sedgefield Parish Hall on Saturday, February 11, between 9am and noon.
