PLANS to extend a shopping centre to include new shops and a cinema went on display to the public for the first time yesterday.

They are featured in an exhibition at the Newgate Centre in Bishop Auckland, County Durham.

The proposals, by Oakgate Group plc, would see a significant revamp of the centre as well as the bus station behind it.

Should they come to fruition, the cinema would be joined by several new stores, a large department store and a caf bar.

The bus station would also be improved, while nearly 200 extra parking spaces would be created.

Newgate Centre manager Dave Wilson said the scheme would be a boost not only for the shopping centre, but for the town as a whole.

He said: "I'm over the moon with it. It's going to enhance this property, and for the town it's going to be marvellous."

The exhibition is on display at the centre and there is a ballot box and forms for the public to express their views on the plans.

The Oakgate Group has promised to take any comments into consideration before submitting the planning application. Comments should be posted into the ballot box before Tuesday.
