ANIMAL welfare workers are hoping to reunite a dog with its owners after it was rescued from a shaft.

The young female Staffordshire bull terrier was discovered on the former Hill's Doors site, in Norton Road, Stockton, last Friday at 1.30pm, by a man walking his dog.

The man called the council and rescuers were on site in ten minutes.

Animal welfare officer Michelle Johnson said: "One of our officers had to go down the hole to get her out, but thankfully she was a very friendly dog.

"She seems to love people, she is very affectionate, and is such a good looking animal she has to be a pedigree."

The bitch was uninjured, despite being in the chamber for possibly two days.

She was not wearing a collar and is not microchipped and, so far, no one has come forward to claim her.

The animal is being cared for by the Dog's Trust organisation in Sadberge, near Darlington.

Anyone with information about the dog's owner is asked to call Stockton Borough Council's animal welfare team on (01642) 528373.
