AVIATION company Boeing is the latest corporation to sign a deal with Northern Defence Industries (NDI) to capitalise on the region's engineering expertise.

The organisation works on behalf of 200 companies across the North-East to attract defence business.

David Bowles, NDI's managing director, said: "We have established an enviable track record in bringing together prime contractors with a wealth of regional companies who have an important role to play in the complex supply chains of international defence markets."

The organisation has now forged links with four of the world's largest defence, merchant marine and aerospace contractors. As well as Boeing, the group works closely with BAE Land Systems, Thales and Maersk.

Mr Bowles said: "Boeing are a prime contractor for the US department of defence future combat systems programme and they will be involved in the UK's future rapid-effect system project."

Mary Goetz, Boeing's director for industrial participation, said: "Some of the key programmes we are focusing on include unmanned flight, and decision making and network systems."
