AFTER his racing career proved a non-starter, prematurely retired greyhound Billy is spending his first Christmas in a family home, thanks to readers of The Northern Echo.
A couple from Crook answered an appeal from a rescue volunteer looking for someone to take him in.
Billy was bought to race but proved a disappointment on the track when he kept turning back at the first bend.
Volunteer Angela Taylor said: "He refused to race so was no use to his owners.
"Thanks to an article in The Northern Echo, a couple came forward who wanted a dog who would walk on the lead, which he does.
"He has always lived in kennels and had never lived in a home before, so he isn't used to things like washing machines, hoovers and stairs - everything is new to him.
"I am so pleased things have worked out for Billy. He is a lovely dog."
