RESIDENTS of Durham City will be having a traditional Christmas tomorrow, according to a survey of shoppers.

A total of 400 shoppers at The Gates shopping centre in the city were quizzed on their festive habits - and the survey reveals that the traditional Christmas is alive and well.

According to the survey results, 57.5 per cent of people will tune into the Queen's Christmas Day Speech, up by 12 per cent on last year.

Despite the fears of bird flu, 90 per cent of people will be tucking into turkey, up two per cent on last year, and 87.5 per cent will be spending Christmas at home with the family, up eight per cent on last year.

The increasing popularity of the mobile phone is also reflected in the figures - only 12.5 per cent say they have never owned a mobile, down one per cent on the previous year.

Centre director Andy Bradley said: "We are always fascinated by these results.

"It's interesting to discover more about our shoppers and to find out what's popular."
