MOTORISTS near the Durham Tees Valley Airport will be warned, but not fined, by a new electronic safety device installed in the area.

The speed warning signs have been installed on the A67 in a bid to cut down on accidents.

The council has placed two vehicle-activated traffic calming signs, one in each direction of the road, on Urlay Nook Road, near the airport.

The stretch of road has seen several fatal and serious accidents.

The new signs, which feature an illuminated bend ahead warning sign and four amber lights with the words Slow Down, will activate when vehicles travel faster than 40mph.

The signs, which cost £6,700 each, have been paid for from the council's local safety schemes budget.

Councillor Bob Cook, Stockton Borough Council's cabinet member for regeneration and transportation, said: "These signs are not speed cameras and will not lead to fines or points on people's licenses.

"They are being placed to warn drivers about a difficult stretch of road which has seen a number of serious accidents in recent years."
