CIGARETTE maker Gallaher yesterday said it was defending its share of the UK cigarette market by winning more custom from smokers switching to cheaper brands.

Gallaher, which manufactures Silk Cut, Benson and Hedges and Mayfair cigarettes, said its share of cigarettes sold in the UK reached an all-time high of 36.1 per cent in the first ten months of the year.

Mayfair was proving particularly popular with smokers moving away from premium brands.
