FORMER footballer Gary Bennett will appear in court next week to face allegations of fraud.

The former Sunderland captain and Darlington manager is accused of making fraudulent claims for benefit.

Mr Bennett, 44, is jointly summonsed to appear at Sunderland Magistrates' Court with his wife, Audrey, 39.

It is alleged the couple twice falsified documents submitted to calculate Tax Credit, which helps people on low incomes and with children.

Mr and Mrs Bennett, from New Herrington, Sunderland, are listed to appear in court on Tuesday.

The prosecution is being brought by HM Customs and Revenue which claims that on August 6, 2003, Mr Bennett did not reveal details of work at Darlington Football Club.

It is also alleged that on May 14, last year, he omitted information about employment as a match commentator with BBC Radio Newcastle.

Last night, Mr Bennett's solicitor said he would be denying the claims. Willie Johnstone said: "As far as Gary is concerned, there is no culpability on his behalf, and he will be taking the matter to trial. This will be a 'not guilty' plea."

Mr Bennett appeared in three Wembley finals and was twice voted Player of the Season during his 11-year career with Sunderland which came to an end a decade ago.

After being released on a free transfer in 1995, he moved to Carlisle United then to Scarborough and Darlington.

Mr Bennett became a coach for the Quakers and was manager in the 2000-2001 season, before a spell as assistant boss for Exeter City.

Recently, he has coached youngsters on Wearside and has been involved in the football campaign Show Racism The Red Card.

This year, Mr Bennett was appointed an official ambassador for Sunderland by city council chiefs.
