THE search for talented young musicians to take part in an annual city-wide competition will begin this weekend.

Ripon Young Musicians of the Year aims to celebrate and encourage the musical talent of young people who live, are at school or have private music lessons in the HG4 postcode area.

The competition has a new sponsor and organiser, Ripon-based David Winpenny Public Relations Ltd. A website will be launched on Friday and information leaflets and entry forms will be distributed from this weekend.

The competition will take place on Saturday, May 6, at Ripon Grammar School. Leaflets and entry forms will be sent to schools and private teachers, and will be available at Ripon City Music, Ripon Library and Ripon Leisure Centre.

For the first time the competition will give musicians of any age an opportunity to take part in a non-competitive performance platform.

All the information will be available on the website, www.rymy.co.uk

David Winpenny, who started the competition five years ago, said: "My wife, Sheila, and I have now taken over the running of Ripon Young Musicians of the Year, and we hope to make it an important celebration of the musical abilities of young instrumentalists and singers."
