RESIDENTS' fears of a reduced library service are unfounded, council chiefs have said.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council insists its plans to move Brotton's library from its home in High Street, to the new Freebrough Community College, will save the service from closure.

Last week, a petition from local campaigners was handed to the council's cabinet chairman, Eric Empson, pleading for the service to remain in the High Street.

But the cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, Councillor Dave Fitzpatrick, said: "By relocating the library into the Freebrough school development, it will be a very good use of public money, fall into line with Government policy and, of course, serve the whole community, and not just the vocal minority.

"Fears about loss of service are unfounded. We will be opening at least the same number of hours as now, perhaps even longer, as a result of the joint working arrangements.

Statistics have shown the Brotton branch to be the borough's poorest performing library.

Coun Fitzpatrick said: "Despite the valiant efforts of the staff to increase library membership, including delivering leaflets round the community, visitor figures are falling."
