GREEN-FINGERED youngsters have been caring for their area by planting bulbs.

Youngsters from schools and sports clubs around Stockton have been giving the council's Care For Your Area team a helping hand.

The sessions, which started last Saturday, are aiming to build on the borough's success in the Northumbria in Bloom competition.

Stockton was awarded the Best Town/City honours in this year's Whitbread Trophy section of the award.

Throughout the week, hundreds of daffodil bulbs have been planted.

The First Wolviston Scout group was out in force last Saturday to plant crocus and daffodil bulbs at the junction of Roseberry Road and Wolviston Road, in Billingham, and on a grassed area next to The Swan pub.

The sessions continued on Tuesday, with youngsters from Whinstone Primary School and St Francis of Assisi schools digging deep in Ingleby Barwick.

Other schools involved include All Saints Secondary School, Myton Park Primary School, Ingleby Mill Primary School and St Therese of Lisieux RC Primary School.

In the last session, tomorrow, local Scouts, Guides and members of Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick Football Club will plant bulbs in Ingleby Barwick.

Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton Borough Council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "We are very pleased to help these youngsters to make their area a more colourful and pleasant place to live."
