DARLINGTON have been rocked by the news that Sam Russell and David Duke will not play again this year.

Manager David Hodgson's worst fears were realised yesterday when the pair were ruled out for up to six weeks.

Russell has suffered a hairline fracture of the fibula after an accidental training ground clash with Tresor Kandol last Friday, while Duke sustained a groin injury in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Rushden.

It is the absence of last season's player of the year, Russell, which has provided Hodgson with his biggest headache.

"Losing any player for six weeks is a huge blow," admitted Hodgson. "But, when you consider that it is one of our more consistent and regular players, it could have a bigger impact.''

Earlier this season, second choice Bert Bossu conceded 11 goals in five games, while covering for Russell.

And, while Football League rules will allow Hodgson to sign a goalkeeper, the Quakers boss will pin his faith in Bossu.

"I'm not going to be disrespectful to Bert and I think it is only right that he is given another chance to earn his corn," said Hodgson.

Bossu recalled against Rushden, when Hodgson was satisfied with the 25-year-old's much-improved contribution following his previous ill-fated spell.

"Bert did everything that was asked of him on Saturday," said Hodgson. "He's back in the firing line and will hopefully want to prove he is a better keeper than he showed in his last outings.

"He has to be mentally stronger, knowing that he's not just in for a week or two but in for a long run.

"If he wants to be first choice then this is an opportunity for him to prove a point to people."

Darlington's FA Youth Cup match against Huddersfield Town was postponed for a second time yesterday due to a frozen pitch. It has been rearranged for Saturday (1pm).
