AN exercise class to encourage older people to get active is being introduced across Darlington.

Get Everyone Motivated (Gem) is a series of gentle exercise classes for people over 50 that was set up by Darlington Borough Council's warden services eight years ago.

The scheme has since been enjoyed by residents in sheltered housing across the borough.

There are now plans to spread the initiative so that older people who live independently can also get involved.

The move is part of the Zone Active project, launched in May and funded by Sport England and The Big Lottery Fund, which aims to increase the number of people in the Eastbourne, Lascelles and Park East areas of Darlington taking part in sport and physical activities.

Lee Vasey, Darlington Council's cabinet member for leisure services, said: "Gem is a great way for older people to take some gentle exercise and is also a really good social activity.

"I am glad that people outside of sheltered housing schemes have been given the opportunity to enjoy Gem. It has already proved so popular with so many older people that I am delighted that more people are being able to join in and get active."

The weekly class will restart on January 11 at Maidendale House, Burnside Road, in Firthmoor, from 11am to noon.

A taster course will start on November 25 at Clifton Road Community Centre from 10.30am to 11.30am.
