OWNERS of the region's community websites have until tomorrow to stake their claim for a share of a £5,000 prize fund.

The CommuniGate initiative, run by Newsquest North-East, publishers of The Northern Echo, has seen an amazing response to the contest.

The Best Community Website competition has been organised by CommuniGate and Barclays.

Nearly 140 entries have been submitted for a total of 44 sites, which were set up free under the CommuniGate umbrella. Nominations have poured in for the competition, with tomorrow's closing date looming.

The latest entries include the sites for Mount Pleasant Rangers Junior Football Club, in Darlington; Bedale Bowling Green Society, Billingham Kids Club, Lanchester Community Centre, Ryhope All Stars and the Hamsterley Riding Association.

Sites will be judged on their content, usefulness and how effective they are at promoting their group or charity. The winner will pick up £3,000, with two runners-up each collecting £1,000.

Anyone can nominate a site for consideration and entries should include its name, web address and the reasons why it has been put forward.

Entries can be sent to Karen Maughan, Community Web Editor, Newsquest North-East, Priestgate, Darlington, DL1 1NF.

Nominations can also be made online at www.communigate.co.uk/ne
