FOUR youngsters will help to light up Hartlepool this Christmas after designing their own festive illuminations.

Lucy Briscoe, ten, a pupil at Stranton Primary School, Simone Harker, ten, Jade Lenehan, ten and Callum Bourke, eight, who all attend Lynnfield Primary School, entered a contest run by New Deal for Communities (NDC) and Hartlepool Borough Council's public lighting section.

Their designs have now been turned into Christmas lights which will be displayed in Victoria Road, near Wesley Square, as part of the town's festive decorations.

Lucy and Simone, as the main first prize winners, were also awarded the honour of turning on the town's lights yesterday.

About 200 youngsters from the two schools - the only primary schools in the NDC area - entered the competition after giving up some of their spare time to create festive designs.

Rob Daley, the council's public lighting supervisor, said: "We wanted to reward the youngsters for their enthusiasm and hard work, and felt that turning their winning designs into actual lights and displaying them in the town centre would be something they would never forget."
